Biochemistry deals with the study of the chemical processes that take place with and within living species which include humans, animals, plants and microorganisms. Biochemistry aims to understand the hidden secrets behind the meaningful expression, interactions, existence of life and the frontiers of life on the chemical basis. Molecular Biology is defined as the study of Biology at the molecular level. Biomolecules can be as small as molecular oxygen and as big as the huge polymer of nucleic acids like chromosome. The professionals in the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology try to explore the molecular mechanisms that keep humans and other living species on good health and provide ways for a happy stay on this planet for generations. Biochemists and Molecular Biologists play big roles in finding the causes and remedy of different diseases which is defined as the deviation from the normal healthy conditions. For example, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, diseases of eyes, infectious diseases and others. Exploration of the basic biochemical and molecular details of different processes of life lead the Pharmaceutical Scientists, Biotechnologists and Genetic and Molecular Engineers to manipulate different processes and activities of different species to harness greater benefits for the mankind and the planetary ecosystem. For example, when a disease condition is explored in the molecular details and an intervention like drugs and medicines are found to normalize the condition, the Pharmaceutical Companies can produce them in a large scale and the Medical Doctors (who also earn an extensive expertise in the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and contribute greatly in both basic and translational research in this field) can help the patients to get remedy from the diseases. Genetically modified organisms and specially the crops that gives higher yields in compare to the one that exist in the nature. Knowledge and expertise of a person in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology make fit for diverse type of professional services. Research related jobs top the list of choices for true Biochemists and Molecular Biologists almost around the world. To serve as the academicians to educate others in this particular field is always open like other subjects. The peoples of all classes living any corner of this planet become the ultimate beneficiary from any discovery and from any invention made by the scientific community. Diagnostic laboratories hold a huge space to provide Biochemists and Molecular Biologists in the professional life and specially in Bangladesh they can contribute greatly to ensure the high standard of health care services provided by the physicians. Pharmaceutical companies now welcome a huge number of professionals from Biochemists and Molecular Biologists. To mention here, the ways to screen diseases and to diagnose diseases, the nature of medicines and the treatments are changing very rapidly. Biochemists and Molecular Biologists will be needed on a steady increasing fashion in these areas. The roles of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists are similarly important for agriculture sector, fisheries and livestock that provide food, nutrition and other essentials at least for humans. For example, Biochemists and Molecular Biologists try to understand the life cycle of the plants, factors that affect their growth, survival, generational future and stability, protection from diseases and other environmental stresses and the yields with the highest priority of interest in the molecular level. The roles of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists in the forensic department strengthen the wings engaged in the maintenance of laws and orders and help to take decision in very complex and critical issues. Nutritional Biochemists try to explore the molecular details of the benefits and harmful effects of a food item in term of a particular condition in and around the life stage. Now a little description of the arrangements and facilities available at the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to help and inspire the students to develop and specialize themselves in this area of sciences. This department started the journey in a vision to benefit the society by educating the students in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2015. In compare to the same department in other universities in Bangladesh, it is in the infancy in terms of age. But the authority and the department are trying to increase the facilities and to upgrade the standard of education in an uninterrupted way from the very beginning. The department offers B.Sc and M.Sc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. At present, the department has four (4) active faculty members. Three (3) other faculty members are now on study leave. Two (2) of them are staying in the United States of America (USA) for their doctoral research and one of the faculty members is now staying in South Korea for higher research in medical science (SARS-CoV-2 virus related research). All of the faculties now holding Assistant Professor position in this department. Three (3) of the faculties have doctoral degree (Ph.D) and others have very brilliant accomplishments in both of their B.Sc and M.Sc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University. Faculties from different other departments also extend their helping hands in our academic activities. With the kind help of the university authorities, this department is trying to build up and increase the laboratory facilities for the students. A modern laboratory facility is going to get the proper shape which will undoubtedly benefit the students and the researchers as well. The department is keen to keep the academic environment updated always with the advancement of sciences in the world stage. We wish the best successes for each and every student of the department. We want the students to flourish in a way where success of a person makes the society and the mankind as a whole to be successful.
